Day 12: Run with Elliot
6 miles, 43:13 - 7:12 pace (7:40, 7:04, 7;14, 6:57, 7:18, 7:01)
I had the honor of running with my former star runner, Elliot Choe. Elliot just completed his freshman year at Cal Baptist, where he competed on its cross country and track teams. He has moved back home to get a summer job and to get in shape for the fall cross country season. while he's in town, we hope to get together every Tuesday morning for a run.
The first thing you may notice is the unusual inconsistency in my mile times today. Typically, you see a gradual increase in my pace as I go, but today, after the always slower warm up, you see fast - slow - fast - slow - fast. The reason for this is because we ran near Elliot's house which is on the hillside. The course we ran had long, gradual ups and downs as opposed to my usual steady flat land run. When running on such an uneven course, what's important is NOT to keep a consistent pace, but rather a consistent EFFORT. This will allow you to maximize your energy and not blow it all on one downhill sprint or uphill drive.
