Day 13: The 2 Dollar Run

2 Dollar Run

7 miles, 49:15 - 7:02 pace (7:32, 7:04, 7:00, 6:50, 6:55, 7:01, 6:53)

So what is the 2 dollar run? Sorry to disappoint you if you thought you were going to learn about some fancy running workout. Simply put, I found $2 on the ground during today's run. So now the question is, can I now be considered a pro runner since I'm financially profiting from running? I think not.

Today was another promising run that showed indications of my improved fitness. The only trouble is the stiffness in my lower back persists, and though I'm now consistently peeling off 7 minute miles, it's not coming smoothly. To remedy this, I need to continue giving special attention when stretching the lower back and hamstrings, but also I'm going to start heating my back at night. I've found ice just tightens my back up more, but heat helps loosen it and allows me to go deeper with my stretches. I'll report back tomorrow on how this works, though I don't anticipate a quick overnight fix, but gradual relief as my muscles in that region loosen up.

A few tips about heating:

1. I find the best heat pads are those that can be quickly heated in the microwave and can usually be purchased at your local drug store.

2. To avoid burning yourself, don't ever put the heat pad directly on the skin. place a t shirt or thin towel between your skin and the pad.

3. Heat it up to a temperature that feels hot but not uncomfortable.
